Pack like a professional – advice from Trek Removals
So, you’ve decided to do it yourself eh?
It’s okay, we understand that you may see it as a more cost effective option. But we still want to help! So here are our top tips on how to pack like a professional…
The reason why the professional removal men pack your personal belongings and furniture to a much better standard is because they have been trained to do it right, learning how to minimise damage and pack securely.
Step 1
Okay, first things first. Get your packing materials organised. Yes, we know that we have mentioned this before in previous blogs, but if you are seriously going to do it yourself, you need to make sure you are not getting too much packing materials second hand. The last thing you need is for your move to fall apart in your hands or in the back of a van because the boxes were too flimsy. The basic ingredients are:
- Boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Packing tape
- Felt tip pen
Step 2
Be sure to pack similar sized items in one box. Put small items with other small items where possible.
Step 3
Watch the weight of the boxes. If you fill a box with too much weight the bottom will fall out while you’re moving.
Step 4
It may sound obvious but handle fragile items with care and should be wrapped with enough bubble wrap to cushion them. Secure the bubble wrap with scotch tape. Pack into boxes sparingly.
Step 5
The larger items require a different approach (i.e. wall mirrors, paintings). These are obviously too big for boxes so therefore they should be wrapped and insulated. Make sure they are clearly labelled and marked so they are secured in the van without any moving around.
Step 6
Make a checklist of all your items and the boxes they are packed in (preferably using a number system to label the boxes with). This way it makes it easier to find what you need during the unpacking stage.
Step 7
How you place the boxes and the packed items in the van can make all the difference. They can arrive at your new home in one piece or in several pieces. Sturdy placement and secure fastenings can help to keep things in place. Make sure to place the harder objects below and the fragile objects on top. Wedge soft (and less likely to break) objects in between the boxes so they do not jostle or move around in the back.
