London Removals – Horror Stories: Doing-it-yourself

The hits just keeping on coming when it comes to a home move. The last blog in this London Removal horror stories series described the cost of using cowboy removal firms. This London Removal blog continues with what can go wrong when you move home yourself! Trek Removals understands the complications, problems and obstacles that anyone and everyone can face on moving day. Sometimes, the problems start before you even get out of the front door!

Here’s the true story of a DIY-type of guy who decided to move home himself. He spent days packing up all of his household goods, ready and raring to go for the big home move. He rented his own removal van from a transport hire company without ever having really driven a vehicle of that particular size before. But he just wanted to make his move and relocation as quick and as easy as possible. He figured he would be more than capable of handling the van and the home move all by himself.

He loaded up the removal van with secured boxes and furniture, said goodbye to his neighbours and his old house and then just as he went to pull out from the driveway it all went wrong…

You see, DIY guy did not realise he had left the removal van in reverse when he backed it into his driveway earlier that day. He was so preoccupied with not damaging the stone borders and walls of his driveway entrance with the removal van’s width, he forgot to change gear when he got in. So with the removal van still geared in reverse…

His foot tapped the accelerator.

Imagine his surprise when the removal van shot backwards instead of forwards and ploughed straight into his newly sold house’s front doorway. He literally drove his van into his old house. This was the moment that cost the DIY guy severely.

Upon exiting the vehicle to assess the damage more closely he realised that he had actually knocked down the front door and wedged the back of the van into the brickwork. This was a bit of a shock to say the least. The resulting mess led to problems with the ultimate sale of the house, damage to the overall structure and issues with DIY guy’s insurance company. Moving home for this man was delayed for a while longer. He thought he knew how to move house, as so many people do, without factoring in other considerations… like not being able to competently drive a moving van.

Here in lies the risks of moving home without any assistance from a professional removal and storage company.
